Shocking Railway Accident

A terrible accident happened on the railway line at Strathfield last week to a man named Frederick Ambrose Thompson, who was cut to pieces by a train. Thompson, who was a shunter on the Strathfield staff, was crossing the line at the Sydney end of the down slow platform with a porter named Vincent, both of whom wore making for the down fast platform, where a fast train would be shortly due. Apparently they forgot that a passenger train for Sydney was due, and as they stepped on to the line she came through. Thompson, who was a little behind his companion, was knocked down and run over by the engine and carriages. Vincent was struck on the shoulder by the buffer and was knocked clear of the line into the “six feet”. Here he was picked up with little discernible injury, and was conveyed to his home at Parramatta. When taken from the line Thompson was quite dead. The body was much mangled. The arms and legs were broken and reduced almost to a pulp, and the head and face were battered beyond recognition. By the next up train the remains were conveyed to Sydney, and then removed to the South Sydney Morgue. Deceased was 33 years of ago, an unmarried man, and resided at Homebush.
