Notification of the death from illness while on active service abroad of Pilot-Offlcer Peter Horwood Arthur Thompson (RAAF), only son of Mr and Mrs Douglas A. Thompson, of Kiewa street, Albury, was received by his parents yesterday. Pilot-Offlcer Thompson was most highly respected among the business men of Albury. He was born in the town 24 years ago and, after attending Albury Public School, completed his education st Geelong Grammar. In mapping out a business, career for his son, Mr D. A. Thompson, managing director of Mate's Ltd placed him with the Sydney firm of Snows Ltd., with which he spent two years before going on to Tamworth for a year with T. J. Treloar and Co. On his return to Albury, Pilot-Officer Thompson joined his father in Mate's Ltd. Soldiering was in the blood of the young man. He wanted to join the Albury Battery, but could not be accepted without a truck. He promptly bought one and when war broke out he went into camp at Torquay with Captain Clif Mott and other prominent local officers. In April of 1940 Pilot-Officer Thompson enlisted in the RAAF, and was called up the following November. At Point Cook he received his wings and was commissioned at Laverton. Later, with his squadron, he proceeded to a north Australian station. His last letter to his parents was written in February. A tragic coincidence in connection with the death of Pilot-Officer Thompson is that his own cousin, Paul, also an only son, was killed in a motor accident at Puckapunyal while in the AIF. Both were bosom companions. Sympathy of the whole of the people of Albury will go out to Mr and Mrs. D. A. Thompson that war has claimed such a sterling son.
